COVER STORY: Systems Products and Solutions, Inc. Posted 12/9/09 Mission-driven, Customer-focused Company on the Rise
Since many of SPS’s clients are located overseas, a globally distributed staff is critical to SPS’s success. Keeping that global staff actively engaged in the mission is a core SPS value. A testament to SPS’s growth is the high customer retention rate and increasing number of business referrals. "Our customers keep coming back, asking for further help on their programs," says Jeff. "We are different, and that makes all the difference with our customers. " SPS’s core competencies are providing governmental and defense-oriented services such as program management, integrated logistics service (ILS), field service representatives (FSR), new equipment training and sustainment, OCONUS support services, acquisition strategy and management support, simulation and training development, equipment fielding, and systems installation. SPS is actively expanding its client services and providing more teaming and partnership opportunities to its customer base. SPS’s current customer list includes the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, SAIC, VT-Group, Sigmatech, LSI, CACI, and others. Contributing to its outstanding growth in 2009, SPS acquired two GSA schedules with LOGWORLD and Professional Engineering Services (PES), as well as an 8(a) certification. SPS recently announced the opening of two new offices. The first, located outside the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan, supports the SPS Training Division including new equipment training teams and training/simulation development. The second office, located in Portsmouth, Virginia, handles East Coast business operations including joint counter radio-controlled IED electronic warfare (JCREW) programs supporting DoD. SPS welcomes the expansion to allow for further growth and options for our customers. In order to support expansion while ensuring continued high levels of cost effectiveness, SPS continues to make improvements that provide efficiency and effectiveness. Recently, the CostPoint accounting system was implemented to streamline and support the day-to-day accounting measures used to monitor and maintain operations. In aligning itself to continue this stage of growth, SPS is pursuing ISO 9001 and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Certifications. Both of these certifications will effectively optimize business processes and increase efficiency throughout the organization. As SPS looks to the future, a key to achieving its goals is to secure opportunities and perform as the prime contractor on more tasks. "We feel we’re the right size and that we have the infrastructure," Nilmini comments. "SPS has everything in place to move to the next level, and to provide even more benefits to our valued customers by reducing their costs. This is another great reason why SPS has positioned itself to become a teammate for AMCOM EXPRESS. As a teammate, SPS will provide better options that allow increased flexibility to our customers." SPS is optimistic about its continued expansion. With additional staff members in place to help sustain quality services to its customers and to support recent program growths, SPS anticipates an excellent upcoming year. Jeff asserts, "SPS growth will be accompanied by more involvement at the program level, not just in the field. We bring a strong expertise from the field to the conference table." TACOM: SPS’s Michigan branch specializes in one area of expertise—training. This focus enables the Michigan branch to concentrate on providing customers with an unrivaled product. This branch’s only mission is to provide local, state, and federal government with high-end, computer-based interactive training products. The group also supplies the services of highly experienced, military qualified technical instructors and training managers who provide training consultation and evaluation services. SPS understands the relationship between logistics and training at the government level and is dedicated to providing the best possible training product. Standards Start Here. BETTS-C: SPS provides excellent professional program management and outstanding logistical services support to the current combat environment of Afghanistan. SPS has been in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with respect to the Base Expeditionary Targeting and Surveillance Systems-Combined (BETSS-C), a system that allows the United States and coalition forces to see the enemy first and determine the potential threats to the operational area. "SPS is an excellent small business partner," states Charles H. Murdock, Vice President of SAIC’s Engineering & Analysis Operation Defense Solutions Group. "We partnered with SPS on a high-profile overseas program due to their proven corporate capabilities. Their responsiveness and commitment to excellence continues to enable the team to deliver solutions to the warfighter." SPOT and RSO&I: As part of its expertise and performance in the program management arena, SPS has been contracted to assist with the Synchronized Redeployment and Operational Tracker (SPOT) Program for the Army Materiel Command. LTC Richard Faulkner, SPOT Project Manager, states, "SPS is one of the most trustworthy companies I’ve worked with." OSRVT: One System Remote Video Terminal (OSRVT) provides enhanced situational awareness with near real-time video and telemetry data from multiple manned and unmanned platforms to include RAVEN, Shadow(r) 200, Hunter, Predator, Extended Range Multi Purpose, Warrior A, Gasoline Micro Air Vehicle, and other Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and manned Lightning Pod platforms. Ronnie Miller of Sigmatech says, "SPS continues as an integral part of the PM UAS OSRVT effort as we conduct fielding on OSRVT systems and provide training for the soldiers who will be using the systems." Following retirement from the Army, Holly entered the private sector as president of ASI, a premier small business, and then in 2008 joined Lockheed Martin as Huntsville Operations vice president, a role that spanned the corporation’s major business areas. Now, Holly has a new role in one of those business areas as vice president of the Missile Defense Systems operating unit headquartered in Huntsville. Lockheed Martin Space Systems formed the unit in August 2009 to centralize current and future business for missile defense targets, GMD, and battle management technology. This unit has approximately 750 employees in Huntsville and Courtland, plus nearly 250 program staff in Colorado and California. "Establishing a new business unit is fun and challenging," Holly comments. "And, because this effort focuses on missile defense, it’s also an opportunity to contribute to national security." In the competitive acquisition the MDA is conducting for GMD Performance Based Logistics Operations and Sustainment, Holly states, "We bring a tremendous set of skills tailored to this important task. This includes a 30-year-plus heritage in midcourse defense, leadership in strategic weapon system operations and sustainment for the U.S. Navy, and award-winning performance-based logistics across the Department of Defense. Our program office and core workforce will be in Huntsville near the GMD customer, assuring a seamless transition in supporting and extending the life of this fielded weapon system." Holly, who led three successful intercept tests as GMD program director, understands the importance of providing stressing target scenes to systems under test. His new operating unit provides unarmed ballistic missile targets for testing of the Ballistic Missile Defense System, and produces the next-generation intermediate-range ballistic missile target for increasingly complex, threat-representative testing. "The MDA’s rigorous test program means a continued need for targets with increasing capabilities, for which we offer the best value without compromising quality," Holly says. "We provide the most reliable targets in MDA’s inventory, with an unmatched 97-percent success rate in more than 30 missions since 1996. During 2009, we flew three target missions, meeting all test objectives and performance requirements." As the "go-to" team for innovative battle management technology for more than 45 years, Holly’s Huntsville staff supports a variety of programs, including the tri-national Medium Extended Air Defense System led by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, and the Land Environment Air Picture Provision air defense program led by Lockheed Martin UK. The team will offer battle management modeling and simulation for MDA’s Objective Simulation Framework. Holly notes, "Our ability to provide sophisticated battle management for air and missile defense is unparalleled." Holly concludes, "Our strength in supporting the critical defense needs of our nation and our allies comes from close partnerships with our customers and industry teammates, and is enhanced by the talent, skill, and dedication of our employees." Tom Cash, enrGies Director of Test, is also actively involved in community activities. As a Ham Radio operator and volunteer fireman and paramedic, Tom was recently recognized as the Alabama Emergency Managers Volunteer of the Year. His initiative developing a database and methodology to categorize the level and condition of flooding in Madison County brought him accolades across the state. enrGies has been selected to design and field the first integrated, wide area networked, command and control system tailored for the Homeland Security mission. Business and Operations Chief John Sullivan says, “This project is the culmination of four years effort and merges our core capabilities in data and video management, distribution, high bandwidth deployable networks, and complex integration. Our OASIS network required us to develop multiple enabling technologies, such as an auto aligning antenna system, rugged high capacity video server, and a remote position reporting system that provides very low latency (seconds) three-dimensional position reporting.” The success energies enjoys is attributed to the exceptional quality and ingenuity of the staff located in Huntsville and Ft Rucker. There are closely aligned part-time personnel in Nevada and the Washington, D.C. area. The company boasts several hundred years experience encompassing all aspects of hardware, software, integration, and systems development engineering, and more than 100 years of combined expertise in command and control technologies. “The bottom line is to really understand the customer’s requirements and develop those requirements into products, systems, and enhancements that enable our customers to effectively perform their missions,” Pierce states. EnrGies sets itself apart by innovative thinking. “Everyone understands Lego® blocks, and anyone can build the picture on the box,” Pierce explains, “But we look at all the pieces and think about what you could build if you had that special Lego® enabling a new capability. Just like with the Lego® blocks, enrGies then develops specialized hardware and software necessary to produce products faster and more efficiently, with performance and capability improvements while leveraging the customers’ current investment.” enrGies is classified as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) and is AS 9100 compliant. “I’m proud to serve the Lord, this country, fellow veterans, and the local community,” Pierce says. “The opportunities we have aren’t the result of being an SDVOSB, but because we’re blessed and offer the best work possible from ‘Concept to Completion’.”

With a strong "employee first" approach, MTSI has grown to nearly 300 employees at more than 10 geographic locations. Kathy Cagle, Recruiting Manager for MTSI says, "My focus in staffing is finding a specific type of individual to join our ranks—a person that is highly educated, technically competent, and someone that is not just going through the motions of work for the money. Our successful recruitment of these types of professionals has resulted in a retention rate of more than 90%. This fact is solid validation that MTSI is a great TEAM to work with!" Rich Cole, an employee of MTSI at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, ARES I Avionics System Simulation & Integration Support Team, serves as the System Integration Laboratory Technical Coordination & Integration Lead and Ares 1 Emulator Lead. In this capacity, he works with Boeing and ATK to develop NASA compliant avionics boxes. "One of the large factors that brought me to MTSI is our ability to recruit the technical expertise we need, both in NASA and MDA," Cole says. "The overall security of MTSI’s continued growth as a company, as well as the benefit of the employee stock ownership program, were important components in drawing not only myself to MTSI, but my wife as well!" Dale Moore works for MTSI at the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) in the Department of Modeling and Simulation. As a senior staff member for the director of Modeling Simulation, Moore helps to provide the necessary tools, framework, models, and simulations for performance assessment of the BMDS. "The culture of a small, employee-owned company is conducive to really providing the most positive results for the customer and the company," Moore states. Within the defense arena, MegaTech provides interactive, multi-dimensional engineering tools, using Microsoft’s SharePoint. This software program enables engineers to have efficient access to large volumes of data globally. Company President Wyn Cole comments, "Through SharePoint, we are aggressively helping to defend our troops by providing the engineering tools needed to make decisions, enhance work flow, and coordinate repairs to keep our military aircraft flying." Within the Commercial arena, MegaTech is developing several products and services, enabling clients to present their information in an interactive and attractive manner through specific, product-focused web sites and high-quality training. The following are products being developed and marketed. Postyourhome.com is an online service that allows anyone to market property for sale locally, regionally, nationally, or globally. By uploading digital images and descriptions, a tour of the property is created, along with a pamphlet that can be e-mailed or printed. This site can be linked to MLS listings, creating an attractive representation of the property with all the necessary information available. With another online service, www.insuranceinhuntsville.com, visitors can input specific, personal information into a form and receive multiple quotes from local insurance agents. Agents include All State, Farmers, Traveler’s, and many more. According to Cole, this screening tool helps customers find an agent that meets all their needs and ultimately leads to an insurance policy in a more timely and stress-free manner. Cole recognized that many businesses often have to rely on webmasters to develop and maintain their web sites This is an overhead cost to the company which can reach thousands of dollars. In response, he developed the Ninja Web Site Training, Development, and Web Market Analysis web site. This unique product/service allows small and medium-sized businesses to maintain their own online presence by developing their own web site. The Ninja web site software and training that Cole provides teaches clients how to create and maintain their web presence without requiring any programming language or webmaster assistance. This software package offers great potential in savings while providing the customer an innovative marketing strategy. MegaTech clients, Lynn and Jerry Kronk (the owners of OSBO) say, "This product was a definite cost savings for the multiple businesses that we own. We were able to create a fully functional web site that looked professional upon completion of the class." Finally, MegaTech’s software program, Home Asset Assurance, enables users to quickly create a home inventory. By loading digital photographs of all valuables onto a CD and putting a copy of the CD in a safety deposit box, a reliable record is created for insurance claims. If anything should happen to the home and its contents, this record is invaluable. "Without this kind of documentation, a person can be powerless to receive more than their policy limit," Cole states. "This inventory can also be an important estate tool for designating giving and can be very useful when moving." In continuing its successful growth, MegaTech is actively pursuing prime contracts and complimentary team members to strengthen its position in the local markets. By networking and formulating well-respected and established relationships, MegaTech is positioning itself as a competitive, highly qualified and respected company serving clients at home and worldwide. Jamie was admitted to practice law in the state of Alabama in 1994 after earning her J.D. and B.A. from the University of Alabama. From 1994 to 2006, Jamie was an associate and shareholder of the law firm Lanier Ford Shaver and Payne, where she represented and counseled management in all areas of employment law and investigated complaints of employee and corporate misconduct. In 2006, Jamie went in-house with Digital Fusion, Inc., where she served as General Counsel, Vice President of Human Resources, and Corporate Secretary. "My experience working as counsel, both outside and inside of companies, has helped to shape the focus of my business," Jamie explains. "The difference in the services PES offers compared to those of most law firm lawyers is that I have not only advised corporate clients in making legal decisions, but I have also worked inside a corporation, alongside the CEO, President, CFO and Board members, assisting the corporation to make the best possible business decisions. In addition, the consulting services offered by PES are a more affordable option for small business owners." "The mission of PES is to offer practical business guidance to small businesses," Jamie states. "PES offers compliance solutions on a higher level than local human resource consulting firms. Moreover, my experience uniquely positions me to assist small businesses as they grow and are faced with increasingly more challenging situations, employee complaints, governmental audits, and employee misconduct that could lead to costly litigation." The AFC is a national program supporting deployed Soldiers and their families, recognizing the sacrifices these families make. Several improvements and new services on Redstone Arsenal (RSA) include privatization of Army family housing and child and youth services. Two new buildings have been constructed as part of the AFC plan on RSA. One of the new buildings houses the Child Development Center for children six weeks old to five years of age, and for school-aged children from six to 10 years old. This facility also provides after-school care to create a learning environment for children. The second building is a youth services building for children ages 11-18. This facility provides a safe place for youth to hang out and do homework, as well as practice music and other hobbies. Buses are available from selected public schools to the youth centers and parents can pick up their children from the youth center until 6pm. Additional AFC services on RSA include ensuring that Soldiers and their families have medical access to a health care center, specialty doctors, and counseling. The counseling services are provided by the program Army One Source and these services specifically support families of deployed Soldiers. “With this high number of deployments, kids need someone to turn to,” Pastorelli explains. “This program is a big help!” Along with the AFC, the Soldiers and their families are assisted by the Army Community Services (ACS) initiative. Under this effort, the Army provides the Survivor Outreach Services and the Gold Star Program. These programs assist spouses and family members of deceased Soldiers or service members that died in combat or active duty. To provide continuous assistance, the Army maintains a current listing of Gold Star families to encourage them and to help address any needs they may have. In addition, the Army is also working to help spouses of our Soldiers find work in its military spousal hiring initiative. “The Army insists we will not leave the families of our current or fallen Soldiers behind,” Pastorelli states. “It’s our commitment to care for our Soldiers and their families.” The Army Community Covenant is the Army’s agreement to work with the community to build a stronger neighborhood. “We’re so blessed here in the Tennessee Valley community with volunteers and supporters that provide services to ensure we have a better place to live,” Pastorelli says. “We’re linked together and work to support one another.” He continues, “We are very proud in the many ways Team Redstone supports our Soldiers and their families. It’s all about the Soldiers and it’s our responsibility to be there when they need us. It’s an essential component to building a resilient Army.”

Contact Info: U.S. Army Security Assistance Command Posted 1/8/10 Strength in Cooperation As the first unit of BRAC to complete its relocation to Redstone Arsenal two years ahead of schedule, the U.S. Army Security Assistance Command (USASAC) is proud to have strength in cooperation from the local community. Brigadier General Christopher Tucker, Commanding General, states, "The outreach by the Huntsville/Madison County community over the last two years has helped USASAC move our entire headquarters to Huntsville while simultaneously accomplishing foreign sales and supporting efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. We were able to accomplish these missions during the move because of our great people and complement of this outstanding community that welcomed our workforce and provided stability for us to continue our operation without skipping a beat." Founded in 1965, USASAC was designated a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC) in 1975. USASAC is responsible for life cycle management of Foreign Military Sales (FMS) cases, from pre-letter of request (LOR), development, execution, and closure. Within USASAC there are 300 people in the United States that manage approximately 4,000 FMS cases valued at more than $60 billion, and another 250 military civilians working in Saudi Arabia. Each sale of equipment to overseas customers comprises the same "total package" of quality materiel, spare parts, training, publications, technical documentation, maintenance support, and other services that AMC provides to the U.S. Army units. The mission of USASAC is to implement approved U.S. Army security assistance programs, including FMS of defense articles and services to eligible foreign governments. "Although small, we’re an organization that has exponential outreach internationally and to industry in the United States," Tucker explains. "We’re a direct part of the U.S. strategy, and we’re working with nations from around the world every day, assisting them with their military capabilities and strengthening U.S. relationships." USASAC accomplishes its mission through its industrial partners, such as the PEO Aviation at Redstone Arsenal and the PEO Missile & Space. "Through PEOs and PMs, we reach out and touch the industrial base—companies that produce hardware for the military—with a large number of defense contractors with offices in Huntsville," Tucker states. "We work with them to develop cost, schedule, and help these countries use this equipment to increase military capacity." The Huntsville USASAC team has grown with new members from the Tennessee Valley that supports two contingent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, among others. "This is a unique time for USASAC as we’re involved in two contingent operations and playing a significant role in training military forces and police in the U.S. strategy," Tucker comments. "A large number of staff moved here from D.C., but the majority of our Huntsville headquarters are made up of people we’ve hired here. We’re appreciative of the civilian leadership, business community, and the Chambers of Commerce that have come together to make it happen." Tucker concludes, "For the future, USASAC looks to increase its presence in the area and we look forward to increasing the exposure of the Huntsville/Madison County area and Redstone Arsenal to the international community that will be coming here to our community." Making Safety Matter The fourth International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS) conference, focused on "Making Safety Matter", will be held in Huntsville May 19-21, 2010. This conference is organized by the IAASS, a nonprofit worldwide organization dedicated to furthering international cooperation and scientific advancement in the field of space systems safety. At the IAASS conference, top experts from all space-faring countries will gather to reflect and exchange information on a number of topics concerning space safety. Subjects for discussion range from astronaut safety on-orbit and on long duration missions, to public safety on the ground during launches and re-entry operations. In the manned space flight arena, a commercial market may finally start to emerge with personal space flight and government-supported private cargo and crew transportation services increasing. Robotic space exploration will accelerate, and with it, the need to internationally agree upon uniform standards and procedures for the use of nuclear power sources. Also, space bound systems and aviation traffic will continue to share crowded airspace, while aviation will increasingly rely on safety-critical services based in near-space. Additionally, most nations now own important space assets, such as satellites of various kinds and purposes that need to be acknowledged and coordinated. Finally, space missions carrying humans are under the constant threat of collision with other spacecraft and with ever-increasing amounts of space debris. Without proactive and courageous safety initiatives to define and regulate these problems, participating countries may negate access to and the use of space to future generations. The IAASS Conference will discuss these and other issues and, as solemnly declared for decades in space treaties, increase international awareness that space is a mankind asset and we all have the duty of caring for it. This international cooperation for both civil and commercial space flight is gaining momentum, recognizing that one day the man or woman who may land again on the Moon or on Mars will probably carry a single, international flag.
